Novice Graduation 2011

posted Aug 5, 2011 10:59 AM by Megan Phillips

The Ka Nai'a novice of 2011 are quite simply unlike any other group the club has seen in many years.  Not only were they doing long distance paddles early in the winter, some of them experienced their very first change practice on their way to Santa Cruz island.  (60 miles!) Talk about a trial by fire!

Congrats to the Ka Nai'a novies! After a fun down swell journey from Santa Barbara to Ventura Harbor, they were all surprised with fun gifts and a little graduation ceremony.

We are so proud of you, we love you, we are so excited to welcome you into the family!

Another Incredible Adventure!

posted Jul 26, 2011 8:22 AM by Megan Phillips

Two weeks ago the Ka Nai'a racing team had their annual training run to Santa Cruz Island.

Leaving in the early foggy morning before sunrise from Santa Barbara harbor, they completed their journey to Scorpion Cove in 4.5 hours.  Windy conditions made the paddle quite the 30 mile adventure, but everyone arrived safely and with great enthusiasm.

On the island, the team camped for two nights with the island foxes, sharing their meals and tents and exploring the natural beauty before making their return journey home.  The weather held up beautifully for the early morning return.

Thank you once again to Anderson Custom Boats in Goleta for their continual support!

The 22nd Annual Rig Run was held this past weekend at Santa Barbara's East Beach.  The morning was chilly, but the atmosphere was exciting.  Team Tahiti was in town to compete, and Ka Nai'a Outrigger had a blast hosting the longest distance race so far of the season.

Thank you so much to our sponsors and avid supporters for making the event a huge success, and congrats to the Ka Nai'a Co-ed teams who placed 1st in open and 2nd in the Novice categories!

Come one, come all! The official start of pre-season is only one month away!
Starting now and through the month of February, Ka Nai'a is looking forward to shaking off the winter chill and seeing new and old faces alike out for Tuesday and Thursday practices.  The weather has been beautiful, and we are excited to see who wants to race this summer.

Pre-Season officially begins SATURDAY, MARCH 5.

Team practice officially starts at 4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Saturday and Sunday practice at 10am.

Do you have a friend that is interested in learning how to paddle? Bring them out so they can give it a try!

Off-Season Grind

Inspired by their success last year, many racers have been hitting the gym hard in the cold winter months to stay fit and strong so they will be ready when pre-season rolls around in March.  Go, team!

Congratulations to the Ka Nai'a Co-ed crew who took 4th place in the 2010 Catalina Crossing World Championship race!

The historic race from Newport Beach to Avalon Catalina was a thrill for this crew, half of which were first year paddlers.  (You can read more about the history here.)  They crossed the 30 mile distance in 4: 33: 07.
